The 1958 FMR Tg 500, often unofficially referred to as the ”Tiger,” occupies a fascinating niche within automotive history. Emerging from Fahrzeug- und Maschinenbau GmbH (FMR) in Germany, this microcar bridged the gap between utilitarian three-wheelers and the burgeoning sports car market.

Developed from the monocoque chassis of the Messerschmitt Kabinenroller, a popular three-wheeler, the Tg 500 distinguished itself with a practical fourth wheel. This enhanced stability while retaining the compact dimensions and maneuverability characteristic of microcars. Power came from a 494cc two-cylinder engine, offering adequate performance for a vehicle weighing under 1,000 pounds.

While the ”Tiger” name wasn't officially used by FMR, its sporty design elements resonated with enthusiasts. The available bubble-top or roadster configurations, coupled with the lively engine for a microcar, earned it this fitting nickname.

With a limited production run of only 320 units, the Tg 500 is a highly sought-after vehicle among collectors today. Estimates suggest even fewer remain in existence, solidifying their status as rare automotive artifacts.

The FMR Tg 500 represents a unique chapter in automotive design. It stands as a testament to the creativity and experimentation that occurred during the microcar boom of the mid-20th century. Its ability to combine practicality with a touch of sportiness continues to intrigue car enthusiasts and historians alike.
